If you work in EHS in India and you’re thinking about your next qualification, the answer is almost always the same: NEBOSH IGC. It’s internationally recognised, widely respected by multinational employers, and increasingly expected on CVs in India’s growing industrial, pharma and infrastructure sectors. Here’s what it involves, why it carries so much weight, and how to decide if it’s the right next step for you.
What is NEBOSH IGC?
The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is a globally recognised qualification designed for managers, supervisors and safety professionals working outside the UK. It covers the fundamentals of occupational health and safety management — hazard identification, risk assessment, legal frameworks, incident investigation and implementing control measures — all within an internationally applicable context rather than UK-specific legislation.
The IGC is assessed through two written exams and a practical risk assessment carried out in your own workplace. It typically takes three to six months to complete depending on whether you study full-time, part-time or through a distance learning provider.
Why does it carry so much weight in India?
India’s EHS qualification landscape is complex. Domestic qualifications vary widely in quality, recognition and rigour, and there is no single nationally standardised EHS certification that carries consistent weight across sectors. In this environment, internationally recognised qualifications fill the gap — and NEBOSH IGC has become the de facto standard for EHS professionals who want to be taken seriously by large employers.
Multinational companies operating in India — in oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, construction and manufacturing — routinely specify NEBOSH IGC in their job descriptions. Indian conglomerates with international operations increasingly do the same. For EHS professionals looking to move into these organisations, or to progress within them, IGC is often the clearest differentiator between shortlisted candidates.
How does it compare to domestic qualifications?
India has a number of domestic EHS qualifications — diplomas and certificates from industrial training institutes, university safety programmes and professional bodies. These have value, particularly for compliance roles governed by domestic legislation such as the Factories Act or BOCW Act. But they are rarely recognised outside India, and even within the country they carry less weight than NEBOSH IGC in the eyes of multinational employers and large Indian corporates.
NEBOSH IGC doesn’t replace knowledge of Indian regulations — you still need to understand the Factories Act, DISH requirements and state-specific enforcement. But it demonstrates a standard of safety management competence that transcends local regulations, and that’s what makes it valuable across borders and sectors.
Who is it for?
- EHS officers and managers in manufacturing, pharma, chemical or construction who want to progress their careers
- Safety supervisors looking to move into more senior advisory or management roles
- Engineers and operations managers with EHS responsibilities who want a formal qualification
- Anyone applying to multinationals or large Indian corporates where NEBOSH IGC is specified or preferred
- EHS professionals planning to work internationally
What does the study involve?
The IGC has two units. The first covers the management of health and safety — legal frameworks, risk assessment methodology, incident investigation, measuring performance and management systems. The second covers workplace hazards and risk control in detail — covering everything from manual handling and working at height to chemical safety, fire, electricity and occupational health.
Both units are assessed by written exam. There is also a practical unit — a risk assessment and written report carried out in your own workplace — which allows you to apply what you’ve learned directly to your working environment. This practical element is one of the reasons employers value the qualification: it demonstrates that candidates can actually use the knowledge, not just recall it in an exam.
What does it lead to?
NEBOSH IGC is a standalone qualification, but it also serves as a stepping stone. Holders can progress to the NEBOSH International Diploma — the highest level NEBOSH qualification, broadly equivalent to a postgraduate certificate — or to IOSH membership. For Indian professionals, CertIOSH (Certified membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) is an increasingly recognised credential that follows naturally from IGC and demonstrates ongoing professional commitment.
In terms of career progression, IGC holders consistently report better interview success rates, higher starting salaries and more opportunities in the multinational sector. It’s a qualification that pays for itself relatively quickly in career terms.
How to get started
The first step is choosing a NEBOSH-accredited course provider. Courses are available as classroom-based, online instructor-led or distance learning — the right format depends on your schedule, budget and learning preferences. It’s also worth checking whether your employer will fund the qualification, as many larger organisations have training budgets that cover professional development of this kind.
